The Penthouse Arrangement
Chapter 1 — The Gilded Cage of Ambrosia Hall
The scent of jasmine and impending doom hung heavy in the air as I descended the marble staircase. Each step echoed the hollow ache in my chest, a counterpoint to the glittering facade of Ambrosia Hall.
My name is Josephine Sheffield, and tonight, I become a sacrifice.
Our family's champagne empire, Sheffield et Fils, teeters on the brink of collapse. Years of reckless spending and ill-fated investments have brought us to our knees. The only solution, the gilded cage presented to me on a velvet cushion, is marriage to Callum DeLuca.
DeLuca. The name alone tastes like ash in my mouth. He’s the enigmatic head of DeLuca Industries, a conglomerate built on secrets and rumored ruthlessness. Whispers paint him as a man devoid of warmth, a predator cloaked in Savile Row suits. A man who collects trophies, not wives.
My reflection stared back at me from the polished mahogany of a side table. The Vera Wang gown, a cascade of silk and lace, mocked my inner turmoil. Diamonds dripped from my ears, cold against my skin. I was a doll dressed for slaughter, my spirit already entombed within the DeLuca family vault.
I reached the ballroom doors, the music swelling to a crescendo. Father stood waiting, his face a mask of forced serenity. His eyes, however, betrayed the guilt gnawing at him. He knew what he was doing. He was offering his daughter to the wolves.
"Ready, Josephine?" he asked, his voice strained.
I straightened my shoulders, forcing a smile that felt like a shard of glass in my throat. "As I’ll ever be, Father."
The doors swung open, revealing a sea of faces, all blurred into a single, judging entity. But then, I saw him. Standing at the far end of the room, Callum DeLuca. He was taller than I imagined, his presence radiating a chilling power. His eyes, the color of a storm-swept sea, locked onto mine.
He didn’t smile. He didn’t need to. He already knew he had won. But what I didn't expect was the woman beside him, clinging to his arm with painted-red nails, her eyes blazing with undisguised fury as she stared directly at me.
