Bullet Proof Heart
Chapter 1 — The Serpent's Embrace
The scent of lilies and impending doom clung to the air as Blair Cromwell stepped out of the black sedan. Tonight, she was a lamb being led to slaughter, dressed in a silk gown that felt more like a shroud than a celebration. The lavish Palazzo Thornton loomed before her, its windows glowing like malevolent eyes.
This wasn't the fairytale ending she had dreamt of as a girl. Marriage to Ezra Thornton, heir to one of the most powerful Mafia families in Italy, was a gilded cage, a pact made to save her own family from ruin. Her father's gambling debts had spiraled out of control, and Ezra, a man she barely knew, had offered a solution: her hand in marriage.
Inside, the ballroom pulsed with life – a grotesque parody of a wedding reception. Men with cold eyes and expensive suits mingled with women draped in jewels, their laughter sharp and brittle. Blair forced a smile as Ezra approached, his dark gaze sweeping over her with possessive hunger. He was handsome, undeniably, but his charm felt like a carefully constructed mask, hiding something dangerous beneath.
"You look exquisite, cara," he murmured, his fingers trailing along her bare arm. "Tonight, you become a Thornton."
Throughout the forced smiles and stilted conversations, Blair felt like she was suffocating. The weight of her family's fate rested on her shoulders, each word, each gesture, a calculated performance. As the night wore on, she found herself drawn to a shadowy figure standing alone near the terrace doors. He was tall, his face partially obscured by the dim light, but there was something about his intense gaze that sent a shiver down her spine. He was an outsider, a predator lurking in the shadows. He raised his glass in a silent toast, his eyes locked on hers, and Blair knew, with terrifying certainty, that her life was about to become far more complicated than she could ever have imagined.
