Second Bloom

Chapter 1 — The Gilded Cage Unlatched

The rain tasted like ash on my tongue, mirroring the hollowness that had become my constant companion since the day I walked away from Griffin. Five years. Five years of carefully constructed oblivion, shattered the moment I saw his face in the society pages – remarrying. Someone new to take my place.

I gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white, the sleek black car a cruel reminder of the life I’d abandoned. This opulent existence, curated by my family, suffocated me. The expectations, the endless galas, the hollow smiles – a gilded cage I'd willingly locked myself into, believing it was for Griffin’s own good. Now, the bars felt tighter than ever.

My phone buzzed, a text from my mother. "Darling, the Vandergelt gala tonight is mandatory. Your presence is crucial." Crucial for what? To showcase the perfect daughter who flawlessly adhered to their social climbing aspirations? A bitter laugh escaped my lips.

Later, the ballroom shimmered, a sea of champagne flutes and predatory glances. I spotted him across the room. Griffin. He looked…different. Harder. The boy I had loved with every fiber of my being was gone, replaced by a man sculpted from steel and ice. His eyes, once pools of warmth, were now glacial, sweeping over the crowd with a detached indifference. Except when they landed on *her*. His fiancée. Ramona. A vision in white silk, radiating innocence and wealth – everything I had once been, or at least, pretended to be.

He caught my gaze. Just for a fraction of a second. Long enough to send a shiver down my spine. There was no recognition, no flicker of the past, only a cold, dismissive stare that burned like acid. I wanted to disappear, to rewind time, to undo the choices that had led me to this excruciating moment. Instead, I plastered on a practiced smile and glided towards him, a predator disguised as prey.

"Griffin," I purred, extending a gloved hand. "Congratulations. Ramona is exquisite."

His jaw tightened. "Estelle." His voice was a low, dangerous rumble that sent a wave of unwanted memories crashing over me. "What a…surprise to see you here."

"Oh, I wouldn't miss it for the world," I replied, my voice dripping with saccharine sweetness. "After all, we have so much to catch up on." I leaned closer, my breath ghosting across his ear. "Don't you think?"
