The Professor's Daughter

Chapter 1 — The Gilded Cage of Hawthorne Estate

The scent of lilies and simmering resentment hung heavy in the air as I smoothed the silk of my borrowed gown. Borrowed, because everything in Hawthorne Estate belonged to *him*. To Finn Hawthorne, the man I was about to marry.

Not by choice, of course. Three months ago, my father's reckless gambling had cost us everything, including me. Finn, with his cold eyes and even colder smile, had paid off the debt, claiming me as his bride in return. It was a transaction, a business arrangement disguised as matrimony.

I stared at my reflection in the antique mirror. The girl staring back was a stranger, adorned in a dress worth more than my entire family's savings. Her eyes, once bright with dreams of art school and freedom, were now dull, resigned to a fate she never asked for. Hawthorne Estate, with its sprawling gardens and imposing stone walls, was my gilded cage.

The wedding was a blur of forced smiles and whispered condolences. Finn remained an enigma, a handsome statue radiating power and danger. He barely spoke to me, his touch fleeting and impersonal as he guided me through the reception. I felt like a doll, dressed and posed for the amusement of his wealthy guests.

Later, as the last of the guests departed and the champagne flutes were cleared, Finn led me to our suite. It was opulent, suffocatingly so, with velvet drapes and a four-poster bed that seemed to mock my impending doom. He turned to me, his eyes unreadable in the dim light. "I believe we should understand the terms of our… arrangement," he said, his voice a low, resonant rumble. He paused, a strange flicker in his gaze. "There are things you need to know about me, Corinne. Things that might make you question everything."
